I’ve never had a real pet friend. We had some birds and fishes but they didn’t live long. So my family decided not to have anymore pets. Later on we moved to a new house with a garden, and my sister and I started to ask for a pet, although we knew our mother had never wanted to keep a dog or a cat at home. She used to say it was a great responsibility and they didn´t have time enough to take care of a pet.
One day my father went to a farm in order to buy some watermelons. The farmer had seven puppies to offer for free adoption. As a joke the farmer told my father if he bought a watermelon, he would give him a dog. My mother didn’t like the idea at all.
Afterwards we decided to pay the farmer another visit and… it was love at first sight – we all fell in love with a beautiful puppy. We called him Max. Max is a Rhodesian ridgeback. This breed was developed in Southern Africa where it once was used to hunt lions. These dogs were excellent at sniffing out and distracting lions while their masters prepared for the shooting. That is why their breed name in Portuguese is «leão da Rodésia».
Max is only eight month but he already weighs 25 kg. My mother sometimes loses her temper because he gnaws anything from shoes and dolls to bushes and trees. I hope someday he will behave properly…
He is like a member of our family. My sister says our family is Mum and Dad, big brother, her and Max.
