K-9 UNIT SHOW AT BOCAGE SCHOOL
The
Portuguese K-9 Unit has presented an amazing show of dogs trained specifically
to assist police officers. .
Most of the dogs were German Shepherds; besides them, there was one Rottweiler,
one Dutch Shepherd, one Labrador and one São Miguel Cattle Dog. They
were all extremely obedient and beautiful.
These
breeds, used to enforce public order, have shown how to chase and hold suspects,
how to detain suspects by direct apprehension, how to sniff out drugs and how
to protect the officer. They
have also presented dexterity exercises, such as: running, jumping obstacles, jumping
through rings of fire, going through a tunnel, etc. Thanks to our colleague,
Filipa S., teacher of Physical Education, we have got some pictures of the
event. NIKY
This is a special post by our colleague, Victor L., teacher of Maths, who has kindly shared with us the picture his dog's grave. Nikky died of a tumour in the age of sixteen. He is buried in the pet cementery, which is located in the northern edge of Lisbon Zoo. Mr. Wolf pays a yearly fee in order to keep the grave of his very special dog, Niky. In this cemetry, not only cats and dogs are buried but also horses.

CAT IN AN EMPTY APPARTMENT BY WISLAWA SZYMBORSKA
Die—you
can’t do that to a cat.
Since what can a cat do
in an empty apartment?
Climb the walls?
Rub up against the furniture?
Nothing seems different here
but nothing is the same.
Nothing’s been moved
but there’s more space.
And at nighttime no lamps are lit.
Footsteps on the staircase,
but they’re new ones.
The hand that puts fish on the saucer
has changed, too.
Something doesn’t start
at its usual time.
Something doesn’t happen
as it should.
Someone was always, always here,
then suddenly disappeared
and stubbornly stays disappeared.
Every closet’s been examined.
Every shelf has been explored.
Excavations under the carpet turned up nothing.
A commandment was even broken:
papers scattered everywhere.
What remains to be done.
Just sleep and wait.
Just wait till he turns up,
just let him show his face.
Will he ever get a lesson
on what not to do to a cat.
Sidle toward him
as if unwilling
and ever so slow
on visibly offended paws,
and no leaps or squeals at least to start.

THE PROTOTYPE OF THE TEACHER
This
video gives teachers a lesson of patience and love – a dog teaching a puppy to
go downstairs. An adult dog helps a petrified puppy to overcome fear of the
stairs. Look how the dog used his mouth to make sure the puppy wouldn’t fall. Absolutely
precious!

WINNIE (2004-2012)
Hello, folks!
This is Winnie and this is me, Carla R., a teacher
of Physics and Chemistry at Bocage Basic School, telling you about our little companion
for many happy years. Winnie has an amazing life story which was already told
in this blog (check a previous entry about Kenai - the dog lying on his bed - and Winnie).Unfortunately he has caught canine leishmaniasis, a disease caused by parasites transmitted by the bite of an insect, usually a mosquito. This is a terrible incurable disease and we all witnessed Winnie dying for several months: losing his appetite and his weight, losing his sight and vitality. In his last days he used to faint and any time it happened, we used to say farewell him until the day… he really passed away If you have a dog, don't forget there vaccines now.

CHINA (2007-2012)
Hi!
This is China, a German shepherd dog, and me, Anabela M, a teacher of
Portuguese at Bocage School. She was the sweetest and the gentlest she-dog in
the world. She has lived for five years with me and my family, since 2007. She
passed away on February 4th, last year. She died of a kidney failure. We were
so devastated that we decided to get another dog. Nevertheless nobody has ever
forgotten China or will. She has a place in our hearts forever

SATI (1996-2012)

Hello, my name is Ana C. and I am a teacher of Science. Here I am to share with you the joy of having a pet and the sadness of losing her. Her name was Sati and she was a Portuguese water dog. She came to our house at the age of three months old and she has lived with us for fifteen years. Not only was she a member of the family but also part of our daily routines. She died of a breast tumor. She left many stories to be told as well as longing and nostalgia.
PEQUENINA (2001-2012)
Hi, my name is
Isabel C. and her name is Pequenina. You have no idea of how the life of a
Physics and Chemistry teacher can be livened up by a dog, a black cocker
spaniel. She was born on August 2001 and became a member of my family in October.
She died of a lymphoma located between the heart and the lungs. I miss her every day, especially when I come back home, when I wake up, when I go for a drive and her place in the car is empty, when I cook and I don’t see her… She was an unhealthy dog: she had problems with her sight and she became blind; at the beginning she didn’t want to go out but then she got used to it. Next she was diagnosed a lymphoma and eventually died of a heart attack.
I used to talk to
Pequenina and she would always understand me, what does not always happen with
people. I used to go to coffeehouses with her, to the beach, to the park… She
was my little girl – what else can I say? I miss her... I miss her a lot.

Hi everybody!
This time around as a response to the teacher training course Web 2.0, we are going to reactivate the blog with new pets’ stories and a new item. In contrast to past similar occasions, we shall dedicate our posts to the loved pets in the Bocage School community that passed away in 2012. The death of a pet to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a human loved one. Some of our teachers have lost their best companions and here we are to share memories and grief. Besides these real stories, we continue with the traditional items, e.g. famous quotes; I am a cat and I sleep wherever I want; video clips and a novelty – the item ‘every dog needs a cat’. I hope you enjoy it and adopt a pet!
